The internet is a wonderful resource that is used for many types of businesses. It is not uncommon for a personal computer to be in the home as well for fun and or research purposes. However, the internet can also be a risky location if people aren’t careful as there are predators out there. They are looking for ways to take advantage of innocent people that don’t realize what is taking place. There are numerous sites online for dating and meeting new people but you really don’t know who it is that you are talking to. Even though these sites are to be for people over 18 years of age that doesn’t protect people from those with a criminal background as nothing like that is completed before they create an account. Some people have found the love of their life from an online dating site so they can be effective. Since you complete a profile you can be linked to others will similar interests that you may be compatible with. Only use the onsite communications with other members because this doesn’t allow them to trace where you are located. Report any activity that seems out of line such as asking for personal information or asking for money. Take your time and get to know people on these sites but don’t provide them with too much information. You can let them know the type of work you do but don’t tell them where you work or even the town you live in. If the relationship progresses over time you can start to provide more information. Predators want information they can access quickly and then move on to someone else. Almost all teenagers these days seem to be interested in the various types of social networks such as MySpace. Make sure you discuss with your child what information is safe to post and what isn’t. It is a good idea to have the home computer in a central location where you can monitor what they are accessing. Plenty of shows have documented online predators stalking children and you should let them watch these to show them the reality of the situation. Too many parents aren’t aware of the many ways in which online predators try to reach children. Even if you have guards in place to prevent adult sites from being accessed these predators are already on the sites children commonly use. They often pretend to be children themselves rather than giving out their real information. Should you decide to meet with a person face to face from any online site you need to choose a neutral location where there will be other people. Never agree to meet them in a secluded location or without letting someone know where you will be at. Take a long a friend with you as well for the first few visits. If the person you are meeting is worth getting to know at all they will respect your right to be cautious.
