Guide In Repairing Leaks On Shingle Roof

Shingle roofs are prone to leaks. Leaks sometimes happen years before you expect the entire roof to be replaced. What causes leaky roof and how do you fix it? Here are some tips in identifying leaks on the roof and fixing it.

Leaks on a shingle roof can be caused by a cracked area on the roof or by a missing shingle or shake. Before you can even start fixing the roof damage, you first have to identify where the leak is and what causes it. This is actually the harder thing to do. It can be quite tricky finding that little crack that causes the leak.

There are several reasons why there could be a leak on a shingle roof. First, there could be a missing shingle. Second, there might be a curled back shingle. Third, there might be a crack or breaks on the surfaces where the shingles meet. Lastly, the leak could be caused by inadequate flushing or the shingles have already worn out.

Once you already found the cause of the leak, it is time to do some serious roof repair. Here are some tips to help you out:

• If the cause of the leak is curled back shingle, you need to straighten out the shingle. You can do this on a warm weather. You can reattach the shingle back to the roof using premixed roof cement or other bonding compound.

• Missing shingles should be replaced immediately to stop the leak. Also replace any deteriorating shingle. It will soon be causing leak so might as well replace it already.

• Make sure that when you are repairing the roof, it should be completely dry. So set a sunny day for the roof repair. Aside from the fact that roof cement might not work well on a wet roof, working on a wet roof is dangerous, you can slip over.

• Put safety first at all times.

• When you are not so sure on how to fix the damage, you will be better off calling a roof repair service or company. They will be able to help you out.

• Beware of power lines when fixing your roof.

Roof repair is actually easy but can become quite tricky. If you want to save money, you can do the repair yourself. But if you are just taking it out of the insurance cover, might as well contact an insurance based roof repair company instead.
